Bird Rock's New Businesses on La Jolla Boulevard

October 8, 2026

"It is the right timing," Stirling Walter said in July, when he and his brother Benny were getting ready to open a diner at 5632 La Jolla Blvd. The brothers grew up in Bird Rock. Their father, Karl Walter, opened Old Venice in Point Loma in 1980, and they named the new place after the beach about half a mile away near the Camino de la Costa staircase.

Other operators seem to have reached the same conclusion about timing. Between late July and the start of September, three businesses opened or reopened within about 180 street numbers of each other on La Jolla Boulevard. All three are built around food, recovery or movement. Put them next to the shops already on the street and you have a complete morning routine on two blocks. Each of the new ones has also chosen to stay small, through a membership cap, a scratch kitchen, or a single neighborhood storefront.

The span is shorter than it sounds

In address order, the new and reopened businesses run from 5544 to 5721 La Jolla Blvd.

  1. Lavande Vitality House, 5544 La Jolla Blvd. Reopened August 1 after a renovation.
  2. Bird Rock Bookshop, 5604 La Jolla Blvd. Opened by Jodi Bratch in October 2025, with a grand opening that November 15.
  3. Sun Gold Diner, 5632 La Jolla Blvd. Opened the week of July 20.
  4. Beaumont's Eatery, 5662 La Jolla Blvd. Hosted a Seapoodle benefit concert in March.
  5. Bird Rock Athletic Club, 5721 La Jolla Blvd. Opened September 1.

The bookshop and Beaumont's sit between the new arrivals. Four of the five addresses fall inside the 5500 to 5700 blocks where the Bird Rock Community Council held BirdStock on September 19, and the athletic club at 5721 sits just past that stretch. The same road that hosts the festival one Saturday a year now holds a gym, a wellness house and a diner the rest of the year.

Two infrared saunas, a month apart

The clearest sign of how concentrated this stretch has become is a piece of equipment. Infrared saunas opened on this block twice in about four weeks.

Lavande Vitality House Bird Rock Athletic Club
Address 5544 La Jolla Blvd. 5721 La Jolla Blvd.
Date Grand reopening August 1 Opened September 1
Heat Infrared sauna in an expanded outdoor sanctuary Infrared sauna in a recovery area
Paired with Soaking tub, fire pit, organic cafe Heated hydro massage, compression boots, dry cold plunge
Signature space Cave-like room lined with rose quartz Skillcourt LIDAR movement training

The two serve different purposes. Lavande calls itself "a community-focused wellness destination." It offers tarot readings, healing treatments, workshops and retreats, and its renovation added three healing spaces for consultations and treatments such as sound therapy. Its new cafe menu includes a Blueberry Dream Latte and a Salted Maple Cloud. Grab-and-go soups, small bites and smoothies are planned.

Bird Rock Athletic Club is focused on performance. Co-owner Michael Divine says the club hand-picks every machine. It uses Skillcourt, a LIDAR-based system that professional sports teams use. Divine says it can improve reaction time and help prevent injury, and co-owner Beth Hunter says it works for a child learning a sport as well as for an older adult working on mental agility. The dry cold plunge requires no swimsuit or towel. Divine described it as "like a big ice pack over you."

Together they mean a Bird Rock resident can choose between a contemplative recovery setting and an athletic one without leaving the boulevard.

Small on purpose

The owners have also chosen to cap their size, and in the gym's case the cap is a specific number.

Bird Rock Athletic Club will stop selling memberships at 200 and expects to start a wait list after that. The first 100 founding memberships sold out before mid-September. The La Jolla community news site lajolla.ca reported about 75 spots left in coverage updated September 30. With a 200-member cap, that works out to about 125 memberships sold, or roughly five-eighths of the club's capacity, within its first month. The owners say the limit is how they keep the attention personal, and the club offers a private Pilates reformer area, personal training, and a body composition scan that produces more than 40 measurements plus a nutrition profile.

At Sun Gold Diner, the limit is the kitchen. The menu is mostly organic and uses no seed oils. The diner makes its own salsas, hummus and the nut milk for its drinks, and the bread for its sandwiches comes from local bakers. In its first weeks, the tri tip sandwich and a salmon plate served with the house salad were early favorites. The brothers' own pre-opening picks were a breakfast sandwich on locally baked bread and a breakfast burrito. Milkshakes and a non-alcoholic cocktail list are coming next, made on what Benjamin Walter calls a "state of the art espresso machine" at the coffee bar.

Sun Gold opened under the name Sun Gold Point, and its reservation page still uses that name at sungoldpoint.toast.site. The space is finished in gold, teal and wood.

Lavande's renovation went into its single Bird Rock address, adding the rose quartz room, three healing spaces and a larger outdoor sanctuary.

The older businesses that tie it together

The new businesses build on a base that was already there. Bird Rock Bookshop at 5604 sits between Lavande and Sun Gold. The Union-Tribune covered its 2025 opening with a focus on its young readers. Beaumont's Eatery at 5662, a few doors from Sun Gold, hosted an evening Seapoodle benefit concert in March.

Two other longtime Bird Rock names showed up in this year's BirdStock sponsor lineup. Wayfarer Bread was a Cormorant-level sponsor and Bird Rock Coffee Roasters a Snowy Plover-level sponsor. A street with an established coffee roaster and bakery, a bookstore, a dinner spot, and now a scratch-kitchen diner, a gym and a wellness house covers a full morning and an evening within a few blocks.

The same blocks, on a community calendar

The 5500 to 5700 blocks are also where the Bird Rock Community Council holds its biggest event. BirdStock 2026 ran from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on September 19, with five stages, 91X music director Rick Savage hosting the Big Wave Stage, a 21-and-over OktoBIRDFest beer and wine garden, and skate and BMX demos on a half-pipe. This year's proceeds went to arts and music programs at Bird Rock Elementary and to the La Jolla Coastal Conservancy, the volunteer group whose bluff work we covered in our look at La Jolla's coastline this year.

The council's role on these blocks goes beyond one festival day. It manages the Bird Rock Maintenance Assessment District and advocates for the area's micro business improvement district.

What's ahead this season:

  • Bird Rock Community Meeting, October 6, 6 to 7 p.m. This is the council's regular monthly meeting, listed on its calendar.
  • Halloween Window Painting. One of the council's annual community events.
  • December Holiday Party. Another recurring council event.

The council's FAQ page lists both among its yearly events, alongside the Bird Rock Tour of Homes.

On a street where storefronts sit this close together, the businesses that open next to each other shape a block's daily life as much as the homes around them. If you own in Bird Rock or elsewhere in La Jolla and want to talk through how the boulevard's newer businesses figure into your home's story, Stu Harvey is happy to meet. Book A Consultation.
